Broadview’s five-year strategic plan will lead us to a historic milestone: Broadview’s 200th anniversary. As the longest-running publication in North America, we have a proud legacy that has shaped countless lives. But our plan is about more than just sustaining our tradition; it’s about shaping our future.
We have bold, visionary goals.
Our award-winning magazine will continue to inform and inspire, and we’re embracing emerging technologies to bring our stories to life in new and transformative ways. Our goal is to extend our reach to new audiences and catalyze the kind of meaningful dialogue that drives real, positive change in our country and beyond.
We will transcend platforms, borders and ecumenical lines, forging partnerships that amplify our impact. Smart revenue-generating decisions will provide the material foundation for our growth. Our charitable ethos — rooted in our vision and purpose — will be the compass that guides us. We are committed to ensuring that every editorial choice and organizational decision aligns with the just and compassionate world Jesus calls us to create.
With your support, we will position Broadview to share progressive Christian journalism for generations to come. Together, we will shape the future with the same courage and conviction that has defined our past.
Our Strategic Priorities – An Overview
Strategic Priority 1: Create Powerful Storytelling Programs that Inspire Hope, Ignite Action and Foster Meaningful Dialogue
In an era of polarization, progressive Christian voices are often drowned out by the noise of divisive rhetoric. That’s why Broadview’s fair, balanced and faith-informed reporting is more crucial than ever.
Our goal is clear: to inform and unite a community of passionate, spiritually-grounded, justice-seeking changemakers.
To achieve this, we’re committed to not only highlighting what’s wrong in the world, but also to shining a light on what’s going right. That’s why we’re ramping up our focus on solutions journalism and creating spaces for people to have important conversations on the issues that matter most.
With nearly two centuries of history and a vast network of connections, Broadview is uniquely positioned to spark timely, meaningful dialogue across our country. We’re committed to launching editorial programs and events that foster these conversations, and to building strong relationships with our supporters so we deliver content that’s informative, inspiring and useful.
Together, through our stories and the support of the Broadview community, we can create a more compassionate and equitable world.
Strategic Priority 2: Strengthen our Impact by Engaging and Growing New Audiences
Broadview is committed to growing our audience because the world needs the hopeful, helpful stories we publish. In a time when the loudest Christian voices aren’t always the most constructive, Broadview stands as the only progressive Christian media organization in Canada. To ensure our journalism amplifies voices that aren’t being heard and connects with those who need it most, we must focus on growth and expanding our reach.
While print has been our cornerstone and remains important — especially in an age of unpredictable AI advancements — we know that to secure our future and foster meaningful dialogue, we must expand our digital presence. We’re excited to pilot webinars, build on the success of our podcasts, and test digital platforms like Substack, Apple News+ and Pocket. We’ll also experiment with short-run, topic-centred e-newsletters and create online resources tailored for small groups.
We recognize that growth can’t happen in isolation. To reach new audiences, we need to collaborate with like-minded organizations. We’re eager to partner with advocacy groups and media outlets that share our values to work on impactful projects together.
In essence, we are embracing our identity as an ambitious media organization — one with an award-winning magazine and a vision for so much more.
Strategic Priority 3: Embrace a purpose-driven organizational culture
Since our founding, we’ve been unwavering in our mission to transform lives and communities through progressive Christian journalism. For decades, Broadview has proudly stood as a registered charity, driven by a higher purpose.
Yet, in our efforts to sell subscriptions and advertising, our communications have often taken on a transactional tone. This has led to a perception that we are more focused on business than on our Christian call: to make a difference through the content we create. Too often, our readers see themselves as customers rather than partners in a shared vision.
That’s about to change. We’re leaning into our identity as a charitable organization with renewed vigour, boldly proclaiming our purpose. We will make it clear that our journalism exists for a higher cause: to inspire deep care for one another and our planet.
We are committed to infusing every aspect of our media organization with passion and purpose. By nurturing a philanthropic spirit among our board, staff and readership, we’ll be better equipped to fulfil our purpose — to foster understanding, promote courageous conversations and spark empathetic action.
Strategic Priority 4: Build Short and Long-Term Financial Stability
Media organizations across Canada are facing challenges. Broadview is no exception. Thanks to the unwavering support of those who value faith-informed journalism, our hope has never been stronger.
We’re committed to laying a solid foundation for continued growth. We’re working toward adopting a more sophisticated database, ensuring top-notch subscriber and donor service, establishing data-driven benchmarks across all areas of work and boosting efforts to communicate results with supporters.
We plan to increase revenue by investing in our fundraising efforts, providing supporters with more ways to direct their giving, expanding major and legacy giving programs, and diversifying our revenue streams through editorial sponsorships, grants and new advertising strategies.
While we are committed to ensuring our content is accessible to all, we are also exploring ways to monetize our digital platforms, including webinars and podcasts. We’re also investing in technology to better understand our readers’ interests and improve our communication.
With these initiatives and the support of our community, we will reach our ambitious goal of building our Futures Fund to $5 million over the next five years, securing the financial foundation needed to sustain progressive Christian media for future generations.
