The first Indigenous person began leading the Canadian Bar Association

On Sept. 1, 2020, Brad Regehr became president of the Canadian Bar Association, which represents lawyers, notaries and judges across the country.

Regehr, a Manitoba lawyer and member of the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation, told the Canadian Press that he wanted to continue to implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action during his one-year term.

“It doesn’t take a whole lot to realize we’ve got some significant challenges in the Canadian legal system, particularly in the criminal justice system and the child-welfare system,” he said.
