IN MEMORY

Rev. Dr. George Langford James, BA, MDiv, DDiv (June 3, 1929-Dec. 5, 2024)

With deep sadness, we announce the passing of Rev. Dr. George Langford James, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend.

George was ordained in the United Church of Canada in 1955 after earning his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor (later Master) of Divinity degrees from Victoria College and Emmanuel College, University of Toronto. His ministry took him to pastoral charges in Saskatchewan and Ontario and roles with the United Church’s National office, General Council, and Toronto Conference.

In 1966, George met Marilyn Morgan, the Art Editor for Sunday School Publications at United Church House.  They married in 1968 and enjoyed an incomparable union of like-mindedness, sharing a love of travel, music, art, friendship, and, most of all, family. They celebrated 56 years of marriage in May 2024.

A beloved figure in every community he served, George was known for his profoundly thought-provoking sermons, his gift for nurturing leadership, and his commitment to social justice, equality and inclusivity.

George’s loving wife, Marilyn; his children Christine (Sandy Rennie) and Robin (Mara O’Brien-James); four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews will forever remember his warmth, wisdom, and unwavering love.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Canada Mission and Service Fund, the Alzheimer Society of Canada, or a charity of your choice. A service will be held on May 17, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Bell’s Corners United Church, Ottawa, to celebrate his remarkable life.

TORONTO

Deer Park United is a vibrant close knit faith community of approximately 50 members and adherents. We are located at Yonge and St. Clair in mid-town Toronto and enjoy excellent public transit and nearby green spaces. Our Minister of 11 years is retiring at the end of 2024 and we are seeking a Minister to walk with us in our exciting journey forward. This is approximately a two-thirds part-time position. We are a warm, welcoming Congregation with a rich history in particular in pastoral care, community outreach, preaching and music. We respond well to challenges and thought provoking reflections and are looking for a Minister who will help us continue to develop a culture which is attractive to all age groups. There is a dedicated group of staff and volunteers for our new Minister to work with.

We worship in a shared ecumenical relationship with Calvin Presbyterian Church. Prior to our shared arrangement, our Congregations had a long history with each other (we used to share summer Services for example) prior to the sale of our Church building a few blocks away 14 years ago. This shared ecumenical arrangement has worked extremely well. One of the Ministers preaches each Sunday and the majority of our Committees have shared membership. Our new Minister will have to be inclined and happy to work in a team environment. We suggest our type of shared relationship will become more common going forward and working in such an arrangement is an increasingly relevant and exciting experience. Interested candidates can view our completed Living Faith Profile and Minister Job Description as well as obtain contact information on ChurchHub, or by emailing dpsearchcommittee@gmail.com.
