IN MEMORY

James John Strachan

1934 – 2025

James died on June 20, 2025, age 90, in Ponoka, Alberta.

Ordained into ministry in 1959; he marked 66 years of ordination prior to his death. James served in Manitoba and Alberta. In 1969 he took a sabbatical year in Kansas, completing a residency in Pastoral Care. In 1972, James worked and taught in the Pastoral Care Department at Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg.  During that time he participated in several marathons.

In 1988 he accepted a position at the Ottawa Civic Hospital. From Ottawa, he moved to the Foothills Hospital in Calgary in 1990. James taught CPE for a total of 25 years. He was a qualified Pastoral Counsellor and member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists. Upon retirement in 1999, he returned to pastoral ministry in Banff followed by a variety of positions in Central Alberta James was an enthusiastic cook, a walker and a swimmer, a voracious reader, a traveller who enjoyed staying in touch with his grandchildren as they grew. He could be something of a contrarian. He will be remembered as a man who liked a good laugh, a good single malt, or a good debate – ideally all at the same time.

James was hospitalized following a stroke in November 2019 and was in care since then. He died peacefully at the Centennial Centre in Ponoka, where he had previously worked. He leaves behind his wife, Beatrix; and his four children, along with their families.
